Summer FAQ

Answers about SUP lessons, gear, safety, booking, guided routes, camps, and Paddle Canada certification in Toronto, Richmond Hill, Mississauga, and Montreal Verdun.

Getting Started

Who summer SUP lessons are for.

Questions about first-time paddlers, families, language support, and whether the program is a good fit.

Do I need experience to join a paddle board lesson?

No experience is needed for most SUP lessons. Regular lessons are beginner-friendly for both first-time and developing paddlers. The Cherry Beach to Toronto Islands route session requires previous paddling comfort.

Are paddle board lessons suitable for kids and families?

Yes. Paddle board lessons are suitable for both adults and children, and family bookings are welcome. Children under age 6 usually need to share a board with a parent or guardian.

Do you offer multilingual or more individualized instruction?

Yes. Our coaches can support students in Mandarin, English, and Cantonese. We also work with students who may need a more individualized approach, including some students with disabilities, special needs, or different comfort levels around water. We prefer to begin with a conversation so the lesson can be set up thoughtfully.

Gear, Safety, and Preparation

What to know before getting on the water.

Questions about swimming, equipment, what to bring, and how weather decisions are handled.

Do I need to know how to swim for a SUP lesson?

No. Life jackets are provided and worn throughout the lesson, and instructors stay on the water with students for the full session. As long as a student stays calm after falling in, they can float safely while the instructor helps as needed.

Why can non-swimmers still join a SUP lesson?

Because our instruction is not limited to the shore. Instructors stay with students on the water throughout the lesson and can help immediately if someone falls in or struggles to climb back onto the board. For many beginners, that close on-water support makes the experience much safer and less stressful.

Is equipment included in the lesson?

Yes. All lesson equipment is included, including the board, paddle, and life jacket. Students only need to arrive in clothing suitable for water activities.

What should I bring to a paddle board lesson?

Wear clothing that can get wet, such as quick-dry activewear or swimwear. Sun protection is strongly recommended. Water shoes and a small dry bag can also be helpful. We do not recommend sunglasses or loose hats without straps, as they may be lost in the water.

What happens if the weather is not safe for paddling?

Our instructors decide whether conditions are safe on the day of the lesson. Light rain usually does not affect paddling, but stronger wind and lightning are the main concerns. If conditions are unsafe, we will arrange a reschedule. If a student chooses not to attend without an instructor-led cancellation, the lesson is treated as a no-show.

Locations, Routes, and Booking

Choosing the right location and class type.

Questions about where lessons run, how online booking works, and whether the Toronto Islands route is suitable.

Where can I book paddle board lessons near me in Toronto, Richmond Hill, Mississauga, or Montreal Verdun?

Summer SUP lessons operate at Lake Wilcox in Richmond Hill, Downtown Toronto, Mississauga, and Montreal Verdun. Students can choose the location closest to them when booking online.

How do I book summer SUP lessons online?

Summer lessons can be booked online through Acuity. Most students begin by choosing their preferred location and then checking the available schedule for that launch site.

Is the Cherry Beach to Toronto Islands session safe for beginners?

This is a guided open-water route session, not a first-time beginner lesson. Wind, current, route judgment, and safe return planning matter much more here than in a simple introductory class. We have operated this route for years and approach it with coaching experience, safety planning, emergency preparation, and insured operations.

Certification, Camps, and Progression

What comes after a first lesson.

Questions about Paddle Canada certification, camps, guided route sessions, and more structured skill development.

Do you offer Paddle Canada certification courses?

Yes. Acorn Valley offers Paddle Canada skills-based courses, including Basic Skills and Advanced Skills options for students who want a more structured learning path than a casual recreational lesson.

What is the difference between a regular lesson, a guided route session, and a certification course?

A regular lesson is the best place to start for balance, paddling basics, and general comfort on the water. A guided route session is for students who already have basic paddling confidence and want a longer, more experience-based paddle. A certification course is the most structured option, designed for students who want a clearer skills framework and more formal progression.

Can I keep progressing after my first lesson?

Yes. Many students start with a beginner lesson and then continue into camps, guided route sessions, or Paddle Canada certification courses. Acorn Valley is designed to support both first-timers and students who want more structured progression over time.

Do you offer camps, private groups, or team bookings?

Yes. Summer programming can include family bookings, private groups, youth sessions, camps, schools, community bookings, and some team-based sessions by inquiry.
